Friday Science - Forensic Science

This is the crime scene, Anywhere, America.

A Ratus Ratus is found decapitated in the front yard of 245 Cresky Circle, Fish Lake, Indiana.
It was a particularly gruesome  crime scene.  No blood trail, no tracks, no leads.  Just death!

The yellow control tape is looped around most of the acreage.
.

Tinkerbell, the black Lab is stunned by the violence.  "Ruff, buff, fuff, buff, buff. (translation:This used to be a nice yard, this may aggravate my restless leg syndrome) "buff, buff, duff, ruff puff (My name is Tink not Tinkerbell, I am not a puff)

Picture found at the scene.  Is the victim one of the rodents in the picture?  With no feet or arms, probably not.  Send it to the lab.  Must be a family of mutants.

Officer Gutierrez is canvasing the neighborhood for any witnesses.

                                 Sargent Clemente has no comment.

The coroner report states that the rodent died of decapitation.  But not from a cat that was seen chewing on the neck at the scene.  The wound has traces of  keratin from a Norweigan Blue.

Sargent Clemente:  Call the FBI, it the serial killer.  The Parrot has struck again.  And find out who those rats are in the picture.

Weddings and Funerals

I do not believe in coincidences of any kind.  I do not think it is the coincident that most people wear the same type of cloths to funerals and weddings.  In fact, there is very little difference between the two ceremonies.  They  both contain new beginnings, loss of friends and lots of lies and regrets of left-out sentiments.  There is music and stories that are supposed to touch everyone.  Children seem to multiply as the ceremonies churns on with a plodding, unstoppable trudge.

Is it a coincident that relatives get emotional to make up for being lousy parents, aunts, uncles and third cousins with six fingers?  At a funeral a man  lingers around the coffin longer than usual trying to remember something interesting that can be said about the deceased.  At the wedding dinner, they makes toasts to the bride and groom with tears flowing and memories that probably did not happen in the first place.

I have fond memories of some weddings as a child.  I remember a Greek Orthodox wedding when I was five or six.  Grandpa got drunk and fell down.  The women were on one side of the table and the men on the other. I do not know when or why my attitude changed about them.   I did not go to a funeral until I was in my twenties.   I could never really see any reason to go.  I did not know they had food.  We had a "come visit my dad before he got really sick" party.  Even though I was much older, I did not know that was the reason for the party.  He did and I think his friends did so it was pretty much a funeral.  I think it was a nice twist on a theme.

I think weddings and funerals cost about the same amount.  When you think about it that way, a wedding party is a whole lot more practical.  I believe that the spirit and the soul leave the body behind and are are looking down on us.   Most people think their departed have gone to heaven.  Whether we are kicking dirt on them or kicking them out the door, the process should not cost seven thousand dollars.

So lets recap this.  Cloths the same, lots of  food, telling lies, visiting by guilt and lots of money wasted.  Yep, coincidentally the same? really! No coincidence there.

A dog's sense of smell

A dog's ability to smell  is more similar to our ability to see.  Researches say that in people, smells trigger more powerful memories than sight does.

A dog can smell a pole in the red light district and can tell what kind of animal peed on it, whether it was male or female and how long ago it was visited. It can distinguish between hundreds of types of animals.  It can probably tell what it had for breakfast, the size of the animal and whether it was sick or healthy,  or even running or walking.  I would assume that dogs and other low to the ground animals need a good smeller more than good vision. I do not think it coincidental that dogs and not coons are used for tracking and searching.  A polar bear or a boa constrictor would be impractical impractical.

An episode of "COPS" in Clark County, Las Vegas.

Officer Gutierrez:  The perps took off down that alley, Lets set the Boa loose on him.

Sargent Clemente:  Don't have time for that, call for the bear.  They are scared to death of polar bears.

Officer Gutierrez:  I hope it is not too hot out for the bear.  The last time we used Bruno, he passed out from the heat stroke and he could not even fit in the SWAT van.

Sargent Clemente:  Yep, I remember.  He woke up in the animal hospital all disoriented, tore up the receptionist's typewriter and ate a Norwegian Blue.

Officer Gutierrez:  You would be Captain by now if it weren't for that bear.

I do not think there is a bad smell to a dog.  A bad smell to a dog is like a bright light to a human.  I have never seen a dog give the impression that a four day old swollen possum was a "bad" smell.  In fact, if you do not control him, your Labradoodle will roll all up in that stink.  That smell to a dog must be like porn to a bible salesman.  If you want to screw up a dog's smeller, you need pepperoni.

Officer Gutierrez:  Sir, the perps ran off down this alley.
Sargent Clemente:  Are you sure?
Officer Gutierrez:Yes Sir, Bowser has a strong scent and is closing in.  Found something Sir
Sargent Clemente:  We are dealing with a professional,  it is a pepperoni stick.
Officer Gutierrez:  He has lost the trail.
Sargent Clemente:  It is like Crystal Meth.  It will ruin a dog in just a few sniffs.  Ole Bowser will never be the same.  He twitches all the time now.

Can a dog smell fear?  How about good writing?

Birthday Greetings

This was an email I sent my sister,
Happy Birthday Anyuta.  I have been thinking about you and your new job.  I have not heard much about it.   This picture is how I feel when I think about going to work so I hope you like your job.
Anyway, looking forward to seeing you at Synovia's wedding thing.  I will be the grumpy one in the corner.  I have to go buy some nice cloths as not to embarrass and well, yeh, say hello to hundreds of people I do not know or care to know.  I just have to remember that they probably do not want to or care to know me either.  It could be a opportunity for growth.
You are doing well, I hope.  You are an inspiration and a great Aunt to my kids.  How did that happen after being such a shitty sister to your pain in the ass little brother.
love ya,

Fingerblister
